Commissioned for exhibition in the la Scala space at Tabakalera Art Center, Donostia / San Sebastian ES, July – October 2023. Presented as a vertical 8-channel diffusion with galleries.
Making Conversation was inspired by nocturnal listening sessions during visits to Bali in 2018 and 2019. While recording, I observed the complex interplay between amphibians, insects, lizards, domestic animals, human activity, and distant mechanical sounds. The environment was dense and constantly shifting.
Rather than using the original field recordings directly, the work reinterprets this sonic landscape through composed elements for electronics, voices, objects, and instrumental gestures. Memory plays an important role in this process: field recordings function as entry points to sensory recollection, shaping the structure and atmosphere of the composition.
Accompanying automatic drawings were created while listening to the recordings and developing the sound work. These drawings are not graphic scores but visual companions that document the intuitive process behind the composition.
