Tracings 2012

site-specific 8-channel sound installation

38 minutes

Created and presented at RAW Gallery of Architecture & Design, Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

Tracings was created to explore the acoustic landscape of a space—in this case, the raw and varied materiality of the RAW Gallery. By repeatedly tracing the gallery’s perimeter with a small selection of implements—including my hands and body, sandpaper, a metal hanger, a cymbal, and an iron rod—I revealed the distinct textures of the walls and floor while defining the dimensions and character of the space through its acoustic responses.

These actions were captured by eight condenser microphones and played back into the gallery through an eight-channel speaker system. The sounds retraced my exact movements, leaving behind a ghost of my actions and a sonic drawing of the space.
