Off to Canada for some very special events October 20 – Nov 5

This week I head to Saskatoon Canada for the Sounds Like Festival where i will be presenting a program that i have curated for the opening evening on October 20. This program is near & dear to my heart and it has been a long time in the making! Part one will feature a solo presentation of Becoming Oceanic, a longform piece developed through extensive research into psychedlic assisted psychotherapy sessions by musician/composer Sam Dunscombe. Part two will be a program of collaborative works centered around the collaboration of historic American artist/composer David Behrman and composer/performer Cleek Schrey. I am thrilled to bring these wonderful artists to the prairies of Canada to share their unique and beautiful work and i’m grateful to the Sounds Like team for this invitation!

I will also perform a solo concert on the second night of the festival, October 21. Full festival details are up here.

Following Saskatoon I will be joined by Oren Ambarchi for a series of Canadian shows (solo performances):

Looking forward to being back on my old stomping ground to share my work and reconnect with so many great people!

The Sound of Distance 4-day event takes over the HKW in Berlin this weekend!

This weekend from Thursday October 21 – Sunday October 24 an ambitious 4-day event titled The Sound of Distance, will activate the various spaces in and around the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) with an array of performances and installations. Curated by Jan St Werner and the HKW the event will feature two of my sound installations and two performances.

I am truly thrilled to bring two of Annea Lockwood‘s wonderful pieces to this event. Her gorgeous piece Dusk (2012) will be presented through loudspeakers outside of the HKW at dusk each day (17:55 – 18:05). I will also be presenting & performing in bayou-borne, for Pauline – a graphic score for six instrumentalists/voices based on a map of six bayou’s which converge near Houston Texas, where Pauline Oliveros grew up. Unfortunately Annea cannot be with us for the event but i am thrilled to be working with a wonderful ensemble created especially for this event which includes Oren Ambarchi, Sam Dunscombe, Werner Durand, Emilio Gordoa and Michiko Ogawa.

I will also perform alongside lovely artists Matana Roberts and Andrea Belfi as part of a spatialized collaboration organized by David Grubbs titled Three Simultaneous Soloists, .

My sound installations keeping the ball rolling, HKW, Berlin 2021 and filling a space with salt (for one listener) 2021 will be presented inside the venue from 4PM each day of the event.

So many other wonderful pieces and performances by Alvin Lucier, Diana Deutsch, Stephen O’Malley, Judith Hamann, Oren Ambarchi, Anthea Caddy and more will fill these days and I am really looking forward to it all!

Japan performances Nov 22, 28 + 29

I am looking forward to being back in Japan for a handful of performances at the end of November. It all begins with a first time trio performance with the wonderful Leif Elggren (SW) and Oren Ambarchi (AU) following our trio LP release Certainly. This concert will take place on the opening night of Editions festival (SW) – Tokyo Super Deluxe Edition – on November 22.

This will be followed by two solo performances, the first in Tokyo at Super Deluxe on November 28 (alongside solo’s by Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger (DE)) and the second at Soto in Kyoto on November 29.

I am always thrilled to be in Japan performing, and this occasion is especially important to me as it will mark my last ever performances at the most wonderful venue, Super Deluxe in Tokyo. This Nishi Azabu (Roppongi) based venue has been nurturing the experimental music community (and much more) since 2002 and will be closing in January 2019 due to the building being vacated to be torn down. SD was the first venue i performed in when i first came to Tokyo in 2011 and i have performed there every year since in various projects and collaborations. I have also witnessed innumerable special and one-off performances by friends and peers here through the years.

The closing of Super Deluxe truly feels like the end of an era, and they are finishing with an insane program of incredible events through until mid-January. I am so grateful to Mike Kubeck and the incredible team at SD for all of the support over the past 8 years. THANK-YOU and all the best for what lies ahead!
