This Wednesday, May 18 I will perform a solo set for Experimentik, a monthly series for new & experimental music in Berlin. I will share the bill with Léo Dupleix.
Later this week i will travel to Oslo, Norway for a solo performance on Saturday May 21 at the longstanding All Ears Festival. I am thrilled to be heading back to Oslo, as i haven’t visited & performed there since 2013!
This week – Wednesday April 27 & Thursday April 28 – I will be at Café Oto in London (UK) for two nights of performances. On Wednesday i will present ‘A Piece of Work‘ on a shared program with James Rushford (solo). On Thursday our duo Ora Clementi will perform together for the first time since Jan 2020 – a set of material related to our 2021 album Sylva Sylvarum on Black Truffle Records. Thursday night will be a mini-Black Truffle night also featuring solo sets by Judith Hamann and Oren Ambarchi.
Really looking forward to being back at Café Oto & in London after the past few years away, and very excited to bring this music to a live audience!
I am very pleased to present a live score for American fillmaker Bill Morrison’s hypnotic 31 minute film ‘The Highwater Trilogy‘ at the Zwei Tage Strom festival in Zurich this weekend. The screening/concert takes place on Saturday night, March 26 at the Kunstraum Walcheturm.
Full details for the concert and more on this lovely 2-night festival here.
I am thrilled to announce that ‘A Piece Of Work‘ is officially out on LP / Digital today via Berlin based label Second Editions. This piece was originally commissioned for radio broadcast in 2019 by Radiophrenia (Glasgow) and was developed further through live performances in 2019-2021 to conclude in this final version.
I would like to send a BIG thank-you to Malte Jantzen of Second Editions for his support, enthusiasm and patience(!).
The album is available at all the great distributors (EU/US/JP) and can be purchased digitally directly through my bandcamp page HERE.
‘Assembled from fragments collected in Oslo, Berlin, Vienna, Winnipeg, Melbourne and Lisbon, ‘A Piece of Work’ is far more than a travelog or audio diary. cole’s compositions develop more like poetry, resolutely refusing to intone clearly about the exactness of place, but instead representing space, feeling and the joy of investigation. There’s a collage quality to the almost 30-minute composition that flows gently from blustering concrete sounds into warbling tonal drones, subtle crackles and synthesized sputters. But cole’s less interested in hard cuts than imperceptible evolution; her elements shift like sunlight, dipping behind the clouds for a moment, diving from view with perfect, natural timing.’
On Tuesday February 15 Oren and I will present a new commission in a live to air performance for the wonderful Radiophrenia in Glasgow Scotland. The piece titled ‘1200 Hours AEST / CET‘ was developed during the first extended period that we had been separated by oceans since 2018.
The backbone of the work is built of momentary daily recordings, mapping each day that we were apart, linking us across great distances and multiple time zones. From Berlin to Australia (Sydney & Melbourne) thirty-one seconds were captured every day at midday for thirty-one days.
The live performance of the piece draws an additional metaphor for this period of separation and reuniting; we will each play a different sustained tone – one beginning at a higher pitch and the other from a lower pitch, and gradually sweep these tones towards the other until we conclude by meeting at the same destination tone.
The live component of this piece is an homage to the late Alvin Lucier, whose presence, work and ideas we are forever grateful.
Details about our performance & the rest of this fantastic program here.
This Saturday November 6 Oren and I will perform our duo at FAQ Festival in ’s- Hertogenbosch. This looks like a lovely 3-day event featuring an entire program of Eliane Radigue works and performances by Russell Haswell, Sven-Åke Johansson & Jan Jelinek, Jessica Ekomane and more. Full festival details here.
This weekend from ThursdayOctober 21 – Sunday October 24 an ambitious 4-day event titled The Sound of Distance, will activate the various spaces in and around the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) with an array of performances and installations. Curated by Jan St Werner and the HKW the event will feature two of my sound installations and two performances.
I am truly thrilled to bring two of Annea Lockwood‘s wonderful pieces to this event. Her gorgeous piece Dusk (2012) will be presented through loudspeakers outside of the HKW at dusk each day (17:55 – 18:05). I will also be presenting & performing in bayou-borne, for Pauline – a graphic score for six instrumentalists/voices based on a map of six bayou’s which converge near Houston Texas, where Pauline Oliveros grew up. Unfortunately Annea cannot be with us for the event but i am thrilled to be working with a wonderful ensemble created especially for this event which includes Oren Ambarchi, Sam Dunscombe, Werner Durand, Emilio Gordoa and Michiko Ogawa.
I will also perform alongside lovely artists Matana Roberts and Andrea Belfi as part of a spatialized collaboration organized by David Grubbs titled Three Simultaneous Soloists, .
So many other wonderful pieces and performances by Alvin Lucier, Diana Deutsch, Stephen O’Malley, Judith Hamann, Oren Ambarchi, Anthea Caddy and more will fill these days and I am really looking forward to it all!
I am very pleased to have contributed a piece to the wonderful Amplify 2020: Quarantine series created by Jon Abbey / Erstwhile Records(US). The fantatic series was begun at the beginning of the lock-in (March 2020) and continues on to this day with contribution of pieces created by an incredible array of artists during these very strange times. I highly recommend taking the time to visit & listen to the growing list of thoughtful, rich and diverse sound work. Check the page here.
My piece ‘cezve rock‘ is an 8 1/2 minute piece made in Berlin – a slow murky meditation on vibrations. The piece is free to listen and download, but any donations of support are also very welcome.
In addition to this piece & several of my other albums i now have physical copies of my two solo LP’s – sand/layna (2015 Black Truffle) and Beside Myself (2020 Students of Decay) available directly from me. You can access my whole discography here.
