A Piece Of Work – LP / Digital – is out TODAY – March 4

I am thrilled to announce that ‘A Piece Of Work‘ is officially out on LP / Digital today via Berlin based label Second Editions. This piece was originally commissioned for radio broadcast in 2019 by Radiophrenia (Glasgow) and was developed further through live performances in 2019-2021 to conclude in this final version.

The piece features guest appearances by Seiji Morimoto (electronics) and Oren Ambarchi (percussion). Mixed with Joe Talia at Good Mixture and mastered/cut by Anne Taegert at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.

I would like to send a BIG thank-you to Malte Jantzen of Second Editions for his support, enthusiasm and patience(!).

The album is available at all the great distributors (EU/US/JP) and can be purchased digitally directly through my bandcamp page HERE.

‘Assembled from fragments collected in Oslo, Berlin, Vienna, Winnipeg, Melbourne and Lisbon, ‘A Piece of Work’ is far more than a travelog or audio diary. cole’s compositions develop more like poetry, resolutely refusing to intone clearly about the exactness of place, but instead representing space, feeling and the joy of investigation. There’s a collage quality to the almost 30-minute composition that flows gently from blustering concrete sounds into warbling tonal drones, subtle crackles and synthesized sputters. But cole’s less interested in hard cuts than imperceptible evolution; her elements shift like sunlight, dipping behind the clouds for a moment, diving from view with perfect, natural timing.’

Solo performance in Berlin this Saturday, Dec 11

I will present a short solo performance this Saturday night for the finissage of the wonderful NOTHINGTOSEENESS exhibition at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The exhibition will be open late for this occasion and at 7 PM a program of performances by myself, Arnold Dreyblatt and Phillip Sollmann will take place.

Our performances relate to the concept of the beautifully curated exhibition which explores ideas that relate to Void/White/Silence, showcasing diverse takes on these themes including monochromatics, minimalism and more conceptual approaches – with a special interest in the link between music & silence.

My piece ‘μαύρο / άσπρο‘ was developed by working with sounds that evoke ideas of darkness and light.

The Sound of Distance 4-day event takes over the HKW in Berlin this weekend!

This weekend from Thursday October 21 – Sunday October 24 an ambitious 4-day event titled The Sound of Distance, will activate the various spaces in and around the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) with an array of performances and installations. Curated by Jan St Werner and the HKW the event will feature two of my sound installations and two performances.

I am truly thrilled to bring two of Annea Lockwood‘s wonderful pieces to this event. Her gorgeous piece Dusk (2012) will be presented through loudspeakers outside of the HKW at dusk each day (17:55 – 18:05). I will also be presenting & performing in bayou-borne, for Pauline – a graphic score for six instrumentalists/voices based on a map of six bayou’s which converge near Houston Texas, where Pauline Oliveros grew up. Unfortunately Annea cannot be with us for the event but i am thrilled to be working with a wonderful ensemble created especially for this event which includes Oren Ambarchi, Sam Dunscombe, Werner Durand, Emilio Gordoa and Michiko Ogawa.

I will also perform alongside lovely artists David Grubbs and Andrea Belfi as part of a spatialized collaboration organized by David titled Three Simultaneous Soloists, .

My sound installations keeping the ball rolling, HKW, Berlin 2021 and filling a space with salt (for one listener) 2021 will be presented inside the venue from 4PM each day of the event.

So many other wonderful pieces and performances by Alvin Lucier, Diana Deutsch, Stephen O’Malley, Judith Hamann, Oren Ambarchi, Anthea Caddy and more will fill these days and I am really looking forward to it all!

3 Important Albums: Crucial Listening Podcast

I had a lovely chat with Jack Chuter at Attn:Magazine for their Crucial Listening podcast. I was invited to choose three important records to me and the conversation rolled from there! I had a great time doing it as i’m always up for gabbing about music. 🙂

Sylva Sylvarum, the epic second album by Ora Clementi is out today!

Seven years may be some time to wait, but we think it has been just right.. Ora Clementi, my ongoing project with the wonderful James Rushford, has just birthed our most ambitious venture to date. Sylva Sylvarum is a sprawling opus inspired by texts and ideas relating to ‘utopias’. Stretching our legs with more polish for the shiny bits than in the past, this album was created over two months in Melbourne Australia, weaving sounds created and captured at Melbourne Electronic Sound Studios (MESS Ltd) on various synth instruments, explorations at the Healseville Sanctuary, continuous sessions at home studios, and with brilliant guest brass players Callum G’Froerer (trumpet) and Joe O’Connor (trombone).

The 2LP set, on mint green vinyl, is encased in gorgeous otherwordly landscapes by Canadian artist Sabrina Ratté (RADIANCES V1 + RADIANCES III) and released on the wonderful Black Truffle Records.

We’re so excited to have this beauty out in the world!
